In this section, most work is in response to disability and illness, with most being daily journal sketches. However, “Pain Scale” is a fully-fleshed and completed piece. I was born with a connective tissue disease that has steadily rendered me unable to walk unaided.
Dealing with healthcare practitioners has taught me that those with chronic illness are frequently boxed into categories, not all of them supportive. The practice of having a pain patient identify their level of pain through a numerical chart with grimacing faces or unrealistic definitions leaves many patients additionally unsupported. “Pain Scale” is my response: “What number am I, and, will I be judged if I’m truthful?”
